ProfileBetty Ann DerbentliSponsoring Organization: St. John's University I received an IMLS Scholarship to complete graduate study for a Master of Library Information Science at St. John’s University (New York). As part of the IMLS scholarship program I was able to present a diversified program of art, crafts, storytelling and puppetry for the Bayside Historical Society in New York. This opportunity enabled me to present my interpretation of the story created by Betsy Bang entitled Deamonsof Rajpur (1980). I was able to make puppets for my adaptation of the story and present aspects of diversity in culture and art forms associated with the technique of drawing called Mithila Painting. This is a folk art of India that uses contour line and specific linear motifs to create images that are made for the kohbar ghar or bridal chamber. Indian artists create interior decorations for their homes; create patterns for ritual displaysand designs for saris, scarves and wall hangings. Children that attended the storytelling and puppet show that I gave were able to discuss the meaning of the individual figures, make banners using these figures and learn about this special decoration. The children and the adults enjoyed this presentation and the diversity of cultural influences present in the art and crafts of the project. This was an enjoyable educational experience that was part of a Storytelling Class given by Professor Thorsenof the Division of Library Science at St. John’s University. Storytelling & Puppets
